Oil and gas exploration and fracking in the Hawke’s Bay and Tararua Our regional economy is based on the integrity of our natural resources, in particular our water supply. Oil and gas exploration, and especially hydraulic fracturing (fracking) threatens this region’s most valuable assets. Let’s say the unthinkable did happen and the Heretaunga aquifer became polluted. Once that genie is out of the bottle, there’s no going back. Do we really want to see an oil refinery in Hawke’s Bay? It has been suggested! We cannot allow short-sighted thinking to jeopardise our children’s future. The allure of quick financial ‘wins’ from oil and gas exploration is an attraction for some, but most of the profits from this activity will leave the region and feed offshore companies. We need to focus on what makes this region successful and grow our primary industry capability, infrastructure and intellectual capital. That, in my view, is a sustainable future for the region.
