Ok Folks, this is my first original post here, so Ill say Hi and give ya a little background. Ive been smithing and making knives now for 30 years. I make most of my own tools, mostly from junk. Ive been helping folks get started in backyard blacksmithing for a LONG time. I noticed on a couple threads that some folks are struggling with ideas on how to build a working forge with little money, so I figured Id post some ideas... All you need for a forge is a fire, air, and a way to contain it... a hole in the ground with a blowpipe will suffice in a pinch. Important to note is the fuel you chose should determine design,,, the trench forge ( commonly called a Lively style forge now) works better with charcoal... the brake drum or dish style works best with coal. That doesnt mean you cant use one or the other fuels, just that it wont be as efficient. Charcoal is a perfecty good fuel. It takes a different type of fire skills to use it... less air and a deeper fire. Coal SEEMS to burn hotter, primarily because, being denser, it HOLDS heat better. heres some easy to make (and cheap) Ideas for different forge styles and makeshift anvils
