Ok. I keep reading articles on this subject because its something very close to my heart. I dont feel like any of us have a right to judge or question the decisions made by either of these women. The way we live our lives is a personal choice. We get to choose where we live, go to school, work, who we live with, whether we have children, etc. Why should we not be allowed to choose the method of our demise? Im not saying that a healthy 30 year old should be able to walk into a doctors office and say, Im over this. Id like an assisted suicide, please. But why should someone with a terminal illness be forced to suffer needlessly? Its easy to pass judgment when youve never been through terminal illness. I have never had cancer and Im no more dying than your average Joe, but Ive been the caregiver of a dying man. Ive seen the suffering and the frustration. The disintegration of a personality and the death of dignity. Had we lived in a state where doctor assisted suicide was an option I would not have discouraged my father had he chosen that path. I would have made sure that he was sure and then set about doing what is necessary to bring a life to its end. I would have been able to arrange for him to see and say goodbye to his other children and his sister. His best friend and his grandchildren. I would have said goodbye to my daddy while he could still say goodbye to me. Conversely, had he chosen to fight through until his body shut down I would have done what he wished, regardless of what I wouldve have chosen for myself. My point is that none of us have the right to judge the last wishes of the dying. The method of your death, for those who have advanced warning, is a personal decision that shouldnt involve anyone beside the patient, their family, and their doctor(s).
