Ok. I saw the BEST BEST BEST BEST movie Ive seen in YEARS as it opened the Urbanworld Film Festival last night. You MUST mark November 14 on your calendars to go see Beyond the Lights starring the brilliant Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Nate Parker and directed by one of my favorite directors in the universe, Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees). She said in the talkback last night it took her 7 years to make it because she wanted it to be quality, and folks...IT. IS. BEYOND. QUALITY. It is a masterpiece. It is perfection. The writing, the performances, the direction, the music...from first shot to last, it is truly breathtaking. I havent felt this strongly about a film in such a long time, and perhaps its because we havent had a real, true, complex and layered love story featuring black actors in such a very long time...probably SINCE Love & Basketball! Not only is it a love story about falling in love with another person, its also about falling in love with yourself...a message desperately needed in society right now. I cant say enough about this movie...NOVEMBER 14th. GO SEE IT. OPENING WEEKEND. SERIOUSLY. (Nobody paid me to say this, and no Im not on a street team...I ACTUALLY feel this strongly about this movie...lol). #inspired #lifted #mademerememberwhyimastoryteller
