Ok guys heres my review for the film version of Into the Woods which I just saw tonight. WARNING SPOILERS ALERT!!!! I will start with the performances Meryl Streep- Meryls witch was a truly remarkable interpretation of the character her switches from angry to gentle in her scenes and songs made you fall even more in love with the character James Corden- the baker had the panic and gentle sarcasm and attitude that makes the character believable and a more entertaining character overall you cant help but love him. Emily Blunt- the bakers wife had that edge and kindness that makes the character a loving mother like figure throughout the whole film Anna Kendrick - Cinderella had the sneakiness and knowledge of the world that makes her a very lovable character with an edge that is subtle that makes you know she is aware of her surrounding dangers and happiness Mackenzie Mauzy- rapunzel was more naive and sassy than in the original show but still an adventurous character Chris Pine and Billy Magnusen- the princes were the real comic relief in Agony their faces were so over the top in a good way Daniel Huttlestone- jack was a younger more anxious character that I think added to the appeal of children and their innocence Tracy Ullman- was a more strict character and had no real comedic parts except for smacking jack against the head. Johnny Depp- the wolf was a more sneaky character and more fluid and swift in his movements which I think is better for the character and made him more of a creepy stalker than in the original completely dominated the screen during his scenes Lilla Crawford - red had a more naive character and more sassy and less blunt in her dialogue which is great PLOT The film opens with the baker as the narrator and you see more of the town life in the opening. You actually see jack climb the beanstalk when he sings giants in the sky and actually sings it to the baker The slicing into the wolf is not shown only suggested and during I know things now you see the journey of red inside the wolfs stomach and she sings the song to the baker Cinderellas mother only appears when Cinderella gets the dress and the prince notices the blood in the slipper from the sisters instead of cinderellas mother telling him You see how the witch became ugly when the father steals the beans Jacks mother isnt beat with the stewards staff she instead is pushed away and falls against a fallen tree Ever after is only instrumental during the wedding of the prince and Cinderella Rapunzel does not die instead she runs off with her prince The princes are not seen with new wives The witch at the end of the last midnight instead of just disappearing is sucked into the tar pit Rapunzel isnt sent to a desert she is sent to a swamp You see how the prince was blinded No one is alone is cut off at the end by the giants footsteps The bakers wife sings the missing peice of no one is alone when she tells the baker he can raise the child on his own Jack doesnt mention getting another pet There is no mysterious man You actually see the giants wife The baker starts to tell the story to his son and the others take a listen The finale song is split into two parts the first part is sung by Meryl Streep and the company as the comes goes from the survivors to the tree line to a view of the village to the sky the second part beginning with though its fearful is played over the credits The bakers father is just a spirit and a conscience not a mysterious man and is only seen in a flashback and when the baker tries to leave the others DESIGN The costumes and sets suited the story and characters perfectly and the cast was I think the best you could get. The direction of the cast was perfect for the story and characters CAMERA SHOTS The camera has a great way of showing scale and a fluid way of telling the story RATE On a scale of 1-10 Id give it a 9.5 I think its way better than the Les Miserables movie I truly recommend you GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! It is very true to the stage show and is an enjoyable experience from beginning to end I think it did the show perfect justice and is by far my favorite film adaptation of a musical Hope you enjoyed this review Thanks al P.s GO SEE INTO THE WOODS!!!!!!!!!
