Ok, heres where I lose a few of you. Not because I want to. Id prefer that all of you continue on this poetic journey with me through the very end - whenever that may be. But I am certain that this weeks poems will anger any number of readers to the point that they will no longer return to this page. Allow me to be clear: I have no intention of attempting to change the minds or beliefs of any of you. I simply include these poems because they are part of my oeuvre - my body of work, and this is, after all, my page. I was perusing a bookstore last week and was fortunate to find a sale on paperback editions of The Classics. My good fortune continued as I came upon one last copy of a work I have always wanted to read: Charles Darwins THE ORIGIN OF SPECIES. I have read parts of the book but never the work as a whole, and for three dollars I could not walk away empty handed. It is quite a large tome which Im certain will take some time to complete. As I share Darwins conclusion that natural selection and evolution, rather than creation, have brought the worlds inhabitants to where they stand today, I look forward to a good read. And allow me to point out one fact - Darwin never said that man evolved from apes. What he said was that man and ape evolved from a common ancestor. And to quote Jonathan Swift: We have just enough religion to make us hate, but not enough to make us love one another. I dare say we shall never have enough for that. Gardening If God had pulled the weeds from the garden He had made, perhaps his human seeds would have taken root and stayed. Observation The Christian said God had created man, but given free will wed ruined the plan. I listened, then said I thought wed evolved; that trusting in faith left much unresolved. And though I allow each man his own views, when it came to mine the Christian refused. Ive found religion gives each man the chance to practice this form of intolerance.
