Ok so I think Ive figured out why I rate FMA, particularly the ending, so highly (no spoilers for those that havent seen it). 1) Its neither happy or sad for an ending, but a weird amalgam of both leaving me sort of off kilter and making it highly memorable. 2) The ending subtly links back to so many different parts in the previous 50 episodes meaning that even if the ending is unsettling, it still gives a sense of closure to the series. 3) The anime in general is very very good at not letting everything on at once, slowly leaking information to the viewer. This means that there is always some element of suspense and then everything starts to fit together and only makes complete sense in the last few episodes. 4) It also makes very good use if dramatic irony. Viewers generally know more about whats going on than the characters, making you think you know whats going on, but then something happens that throws what you thought was happening out the window, so its constantly changing and keeps it interesting. And thats pretty much it. Thats why I find Full Metal Alchemist that good. - Honch
