Ok, so I was asked what were some of my favorite books on the subject of gardening and raising food for ones own family. There are plenty of good reads out there but a few of my favorite books are 1) Eliot Colemans books (The New Organic Gardener, The Winter Harvest Manuel, Four Season Harvest). He does a great job of laying it out. 2) Anna Edeys- Solviva, subtitled how to grow $500,000 on one acre and have peace on earth. She does an amazing job of setting a philosophy and blueprint for Bio-Benign Solar-Passive Design and an energy intelligent way to look at human habitation and waste management. 3) Michael Ablemans- On Good Land and Fields of Plenty. On Good Land is great for placing an ordinary citizen into the viewpoint of a small farmer. Im certain you would laugh and ponder if you read it. Fields of Plenty is about a seasons journey he took to visit more than twenty separate farms across the country, a book with a good social perspective on diversity in farming while On Good Land provides a personal view, the reality of growing great food and a social perspective of that endeavor. John Jeavons- How to Grow More Food On Less Land is a great read for considering how to grow enough energy or calories from ones own garden. Detail and data on growing enough energy to meet ones need on a plant based diet from smaller scale plots. Along with Eliots books it provides great technical information. From a business point of view I recommend The Market Gardener by Jean-Martin Fortier. This gentleman puts together a thoughtful collage of ideas on how to be profitable and efficient from a small acre point of view. Feeding 250 families from only one and a half acres he has plenty of great advice for those considering market gardening. For all around everyone should own a copy of Back To Basics from Tiime Life. Thats all for now folks.
