Ok, this might lose me some facebook friends, but its gotta be said. Creationism should NOT be taught as science because it is - literally - NOT science, nor is it based on science. The scientific method has never been applied to it, nor has it ever been published in a scientific peer review context. Unlike current theories regarding the origin of the earth and/or universe, there is no vast pool of proven and tested facts to support it. Creationism seeks to thrive in the cracks by pointing out anomalies in scientific origin theories as proof they are wrong. In effect, Creationists attempt to eliminate scientific theories to prove via disproof that Creationism is correct. Creationism isnt science. Its religion, and its faith-based. For the longest time, Creationism was taught in Sunday schools across the nation - because THATS WHERE IT BELONGS. It should be taught as an alternative answer in a faith-based context, by a faith-based institution, and NOT in a formal educational setting as science. The effort to portray Creationism as a science is strictly a backlash from religious folks who feel that their faith is threatened by science. Whats incredibly sad about that is that the SHOULD be viewing this as a TEST of their faith. The truly sad thing is that every time one of them misguidedly fights to get their faith-based beliefs taught in an academic setting, theyre diminishing their faith and harming it - and they dont realize it. Kids arent stupid. Put them in a classroom, teach them scientific theories side-by-side with faith-based theories, and after a period of confusion, theyll realize which version is the most likely correct... setting some of them up for agonizing conflict, as they have to choose between two things, one of which will make their parents/family happy, and one of which they realize has overwhelming proof. Its likewise sad they have to go through this. They shouldnt have to. In fact, theres a lot of very sad things about the entire situation. The current Pope has said to the world that the Catholic Church needs to stay out of things that simply arent its focus, and to get back to its core teachings - spirituality. The Catholic Churchs issues are reflected by ALL religions today, Christian or otherwise. If they all stuck to the core of their beliefs, how humanity should commune with God (whatever form that takes for them), and stay OUT of the rest of it, there would BE no conflict, and they wouldnt be losing believers at the rate they are today.
