Okay folks, if you want to possibly avoid a ticket, read this! We will be doing a Targeted Pedestrian Enforcement operation this Friday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Table Rock Road and Mace Road. We know, youve see these before but this one will be a bit different. We will be focusing on yielding to pedestrians at UNMARKED CROSSWALKS. Our goal is to raise awareness about this law to keep pedestrians safe. Typically, we do these operations at marked crosswalks which is much more obvious that you have to yield to pedestrians. The unmarked crosswalks (non painted) may be a little more tricky, which is why we have included photos. So, for example, you are are driving north on Table Rock Road at the intersection of Mace (unmarked crosswalk) and you see a pedestrian wanting to cross in your lane or an adjacent lane, you need to stop and let them cross. We fear that most people would not know this and believe that since there is no marked crosswalk, then vehicles have the right of way. Not the case. Per the Oregon DMV Driver Manual, It is important to remember there is a crosswalk at every intersection, even if it is not marked by painted lines. As stated on page 79 of the 2014-2015 Oregon Driver Manual, “To determine where an unmarked crosswalk is, imagine that the sidewalk or shoulder at the corner extends across the road and meets the sidewalk or shoulder on the other side of the road.” Weve included another intersection example at McAndrews and Keene Way, just to show a better understanding. The actual operation will be on Table Rock and Mace. Also a note to pedestrians: Please do not blindly step into the lane of traffic because you have the right of way. Wait for traffic to come to a stop.
