Okay, heres your Halloween story and I swear it is true. It happened to me. Some years back we had a well-planned trip to England. The first night, after driving the rental car from Heathrow, we stayed at a B&B in Oxford. It was an old Victorian house and our room was on the main floor, just inside the front door of the house. About 11PM as I was drifting off to sleep I heard a fire gong. I nudged my husband who didnt respond until several serious nudges. He still didnt get up. I put on my robe and slippers to see what was going on in the building. Were there others fleeing the building? No. Not a person in sight, no smoke and no fire. I went back to the room. The gong did not stop. I nudged him again. He swore he heard nothing. I checked the hallway again and down into the breakfast room. Nothing. Finally I tried to ignore it and drifted off to sleep around 2AM. I refused to spend the second night at the B&B. Something there didnt want me around. A few nights later we stayed at an old multi-story mansion (that had seen better days) at Brighton along the English seacoast. I had read where the mansion once belonged to members of the wealthy Sackville family and it was a vacation retreat where they entertained friends and spent their summers on the beach. About 11PM, just as I drifted off to sleep I heard laughter, talking and clinking of glasses below us. I tried to ignore it but it got louder. My husband, sound sleeper he is, didnt hear the noise and ignored my nudgings. I tried sleeping in the bathtub thinking it was quieter in there. No such luck. Finally I called the front desk asking them to contact the party below us and tell them to SHUT UP! The attendant said he would call them. An hour later the noise was back. I called again. He said he would take care of it. The noise was back at 1AM. I got up, put on my slippers and robe and marched down to the lobby. A startled attendant agreed to take me to the room where the party was carrying on. We came to the door and he stopped dead in his tracks. He did not knock on the door. He turned to me and asked Do you hear anything? I replied No, not now. He sleepily replied Hopefully you wont be bothered by them again because there is no one renting in that room tonight. It is vacant. Needless to say, I refused to spend the second planned night in that B&B. Fortunately the rest of the trip was free of spirits kicking me out of B&Bs.
