Okay so THIS is the most important story in terms of TVP and how it begun that you will ever read, this Horse has inspired the rescue of nearly 1000 horses over a 2.5 yr period and the inspiration she has given to a lady nothing short of an Angel on earth is beyond comprehension. Sharon Clarke goes above and beyond everyday 7 days a week, she doesnt get paid the family help out her husband Steve her some John Clarke her son Zoe Clarke her daughter the all assist as a family with Sharons dreams and god knows I have tried to write this story, to compact it , shorten it and make it easier to read but every time I try its ended up in my recycle bin. The truth is the only lady that can tell you this story is The lady that lived it Sharon so Im going to tell it verbatim in Sharons words . Meet Sprit responsible for nearly 1000 horses being rescued in the last few years Im sorry but this is the only comfort I can offer you with her story but if you dare to read on you will understand why Sharon does what she does . Sharons story so it was September 2012 , their voice had been going about 4 months and there wasnt a great deal happening!, it was 10 pm and I was getting ready for bed when I thought Ill just check Facebook which at the time was unusual for me . There I saw a plea for for help, people saying a mare was down in Leiria and she needed help. So I called a friend that I worked with at the time and asked him to call the number to see if he could find out what was going on , he called back saying it sounded bad , so not really knowing what we were about to face we jumped in the car and off we went . Some people met us nearby to show us were she was. I couldnt believe what I saw ... A huge mare lying on the ground with marks all around her where she had been thrashing around . We had just had the first rain for many months and where she was lying was getting waterlogged . By this time it was midnight and we had a crowd with headlights and torches all wanting to help. So the all looked at me and said what shall we do ? My heart sank Id never seen such a sorry looking horse in my life the locals said she had been where she lay for two days and my head just told me to turn her onto her other side . We saw straight away that she had lost a lot of skin from laying in the same position for so long but at that time I didnt have any medication to give her or supplies to treat her wounds not like today. We knew we had to get her up but she didnt have the strength to try, we called everyone that night , fire brigade , no police , no vet no one would help us . Someone came up with the idea of calling a tow truck company , out of sheer desperation I did . 3.30 am the tow truck arrived at the scene . he dragged her body out of the mud with her ripping at the grass shoots with her lips as she was dragged out. he then very slowly lifted her to her feet but she was so weak she was finding it hard to stand . the driver was fantastic and waited while she got her balance before releasing the slings. She walked off and ate ate ate . The driver was there for hours but wouldnt except a cent for his work . So at 5:30 am we headed hometown try to find someone with a transport to pick her up . We arrived back on scene at 9:30 am with a trailer and to our horror she was down again !! There was a huge crowd gathered , newspapers , police , luckily there was an electricity company there with the machines needed to get her up again. My head was screaming call the vet and put this poor animal to sleep but the crowd was getting irritated by this and screaming she wants to live shes eating give her a chance . So I made the driver park that trailer quiet far away and I said if she makes it to that trailer then I will take her, if not I end it now ....... Sharon had to take a break here Part 2 So with that she dragged me to and then onto the trailer !! The police said I could stay in the trailer with her for the 45 min journey home. She stayed up all the way bless her heart, it was like she knew. Then I made the biggest mistake I could of made , I put her in a stable with a nice big bed !! She wanted to live , she wanted to try and I stupidly thought I was home and dry . The vet saw her and gave her some pick me ups so I really thought she would be okay. The next morning I ran to the stables and found her down again... This huge mare now down in a little stable .... What was I thinking putting her in there !! We called the farmer next door and he came out with his tractor and gently got her out , then the fire brigade lifted her once again. After that she went straight in the sand school where it was soft and machines could get to her if needed, which we did for the next two days the fire brigade continued to get her up. Vets were all around giving fluids and doing whatever they could to save her. She showed no sign of pain and as soon as she was up wanted to go off and munch on some hay, but the third day was different , the. The fire brigade lifted her, she didnt rush straight to her feet , she hesitated , she was loosing that spark that we had re kindled in her eyes . she was dying and I knew it. The vet put another drip on her and she seemed to pick up abit . later that afternoon I noticed she was showing signs of a colic so out came the vet again , she picked up yet again so we were happy , Sam , Steve my husband and I decided to take it turns to keep walking her , we made a pact that we would walk all night if we had to. It was Steves turn and Sam and I sat down with a cup of tea , I said that evening If she goes down again its over and I was going to stick to it. all of a sudden Sam and I saw Spirit position her legs to lay down , both cups of tea went flying through the air and we both ran screaming , we couldnt get her up, she wouldnt try. I will never forget that look she gave me, that last plea for help, without hesitation I called the vet. I had to sit on her neck as she started to smash her head on the ground in agony. She arrived about 15 mins after my call and examined her.well sorry but shes dying she theres nothing we can do she said the she said there is one more thing but I dont think it will work so I said no , she is suffering and I couldnt leave her to suffer another night. When the vet came with the injection she stopped thrashing around and laid still as she could , her head was in my lap and we just looked into each others eyes . I lent down and gave her a final kiss on her head , I told her that I was sorry that this had happened to her. She took one final breath and slipped away in total peace. Spirit had been abandoned stood in a river tied to a tree. Someone had cut the rope and she had made it to the land and collapsed with exhaustion . The police and the council vet had both been there twice to see if she had died yet !! The owner got a 30 euro fine , not for animal cruelty but for abandoning an animal on public land !! To this day this man still hasnt paid his 30 euro fine! Since Spirit , we have taken two more horses from this man there was only one survivor of the three including Sprit, Olivia Maria who still looks for a very special home and florabella In the words of Sharon
