Okay so wasp in common British English use (and on that comparison with bees that Ive seen 1000 times now) refers to what Americans call yellow jackets. The reason that graphic rankles us bug folks is that wasp to us stands for several thousand species of insect that are mostly parasitoids (parasites but they kill their host) and predators of other insects. Bees are a group of wasps that have evolved to feed on plant material instead of animal material. Ants are a group of wasps that have dispensed with wings unless they are in reproductive mode. Wasp is such a broad term that its almost meaningless. It really means all hymenopterans except bees, ants, and sawflies. askanaturalist/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/Hymenoptera%20Phylogeny.jpg
