Old enough to remember when Times forbade Ms. as an honorific. - TopicsExpress

Old enough to remember when Times forbade Ms. as an honorific. Reporters ---- Eeeewww ---- had to ask female interview subjects if married or single. And gay? First never. Then only as adjective not noun. Then noun, too, but every story had to use both in exactly equal number. Important editors showed up in newsroom late at night to count. Silly? Maybe. But Phil Corbett, Patrick LaForge & crew love the language, would rather be last than first and not fall for every short-lived, politically-correct locution. In the NYT, garbage men never got called sanitation engineers merely because they asked. This reader appreciates their vigilance. And appreciated it, even when I also hated being a reporter bound by the rules.
