Omar Gharbas (al-Khojji), who was the cleric of a Free Syrian Army (FSA) brigade known as Ahbab Allah (Allahs Beloved), became infamous for his smashing of a statue of the Virgin Mary in Idlib in 2013. During an interview conducted with BBC Arabic in early 2012, he claims that al-Qaeda is Syria was created by the Syrian regime to scare the West and the rebels. This is a claim that many in the so-called Syrian opposition blindly repeat without any factual basis. This same cleric defected later from the FSA to join the ranks of the hardcore terrorist group, the Islamic State, which is formerly known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), an entity that he previously claimed was created by the Syrian regime.
