Omar approves liver transplantation unit for SKIMS Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir government has approved a liver transplantation unit for Sher- e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) - the only super-specialty hospital and research institute in the state. "After successful functioning of the kidney and autologous bone marrow transplantation units in SKIMS during the last two years, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah yesterday approved an liver transplantation unit for the Institute," an official spokesman said on Saturday. Omar gave nod to the proposal at the 40th Governing Body meeting of SKIMS here and approved the yearly grant of Rs one crore for placement of trained staff for making the unit functional, the spokesman said. He said the facility would be a landmark initiative of the Omar Abdullah-led government after the establishment of autologous bone marrow and kidney transplantation units and installation of PET-Scan in PPP mode at a cost of over Rs 22 crore. The chief minister is keen to see SKIMS emerging as one of the leading referral hospitals in the country so that the people from the state do not need to visit outside for specialised treatments, the spokesman said. The chief minister also emphasised the consolidation and placement of staff in rural health centres and implementation of flagship programmes in the health sector to ensure better medicare coverage to the people across the state, he added.
