On 20 September, a protest rally made its way around the city, resolute in its stride that they will meet violence with peace and art (the lines lathir mukhe gaaner, shuniye dilo Jadavpur, which became their war cry, literally translate into Jadavpur has shown how to meet each blow of the stick with a song). Songs, skits and shouts of Hok Kolorob (literally, meaning let there be noise), filled the city skies that day. The movement has not stopped since, neither in momentum nor in resolution. Current and ex-students of the university have been joined by all and sundry (there were at least 30,000-1,00, 000 people at the rally) to form a community that believes in using art to destabilise; not because they cannot adopt an alternate weapon but because they believe it is not inferior to any other tool. Now most of the whitewashed walls of the 67.6-acre university have transformed into canvases of charcoal sketches; perhaps not of great finesse but assertive, vigorous and most importantly, hailing anarchy. Music and art have become the sole life-giver to the movement. #hokkolorob
