On 30 July 1962, the TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY was opened. Spanning 4,990 miles (8,030 km), from the Pacific Coast in British Columbia to the Atlantic Coast in Newfoundland, the TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY is the longest paved national highway system in world. Construction on the highway began in 1950, and the last section was completed in 1971. A ferry system links Nova Scotia with Newfoundland. In 2012, a series of electric vehicle charging stations were installed along the main route of the highway, making the TRANS-CANADA HIGHWAY the longest electric-vehicle-ready highway in the world.
