On 31 October, the new Obluchensk tunnel opened on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The construction of the single-track 862 metre Obluchensk tunnel began in the fall of 2011. Drilling equipment was used in its excavation. The entire length of the tunnel is waterproofed with a protective film and its drainage trays employ the use of heating equipment. A new signalling system has been installed so that trains may remain connected with the signalling network.
