On 5 November 2014 the body of Aung Kyaw Naing was taken from a shallow grave in Kyaikmayaw township to be transferred to the hospital in the Mon State capital, Mawlamyine. More than one hundred people, including lawyers, doctors and civil society activists, witnessed the exhumation. According to human rights lawyer Mr Robert Sann Aung. who represents the family of the killed journalist, There are blood marks on both sides of Aung Kyaw Naings chest, on his skin. His skull is broken and his jaw was completely smashed. Ms Than Dar, the widow of Aung Kyaw Naing and an activist of the local Peace and Women Network, stated that “The doctor said one bullet passed through the chin to the head; two were shot through his back and exited through the chest; one was in his thigh; and one in his ankle”. In total, five bullet wounds were uncovered on the exhumed body. Witnesses of Aung Kyaw Naings exhumation agree that he was tortured prior to being killed.
