On April 19, 2014, the Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia at Dalton State College is sponsoring the Civil War battlefield tour “Trading Space for Time: General Joseph E. Johnston and the Atlanta Campaign.” The tour will focus on Johnstons inability to halt the Federal advance through Northwest Georgia toward Atlanta. Historian and author Richard McMurry will conduct the tour of the campaign that sealed the fate of the Confederacy. Beginning at Poplar Springs Church in Crow Valley, the tour will trace the engagements around Dalton then follow the movements of the Union and Confederate forces through Resaca, to the battles of Pickett’s Mill, New Hope Church, and Kennesaw Mountain as General Johnston unsuccessfully attempted to halt the federal advance through Northwest Georgia toward Atlanta. Participants in the tour will have the opportunity to walk the ground of these conflicts and visit the state and national museums dedicated to the battles. Between stops at these sights, Mr. McMurry will provide the audience with his vivid insights into the personalities and actions of the generals and common soldiers engaged in the most decisive campaign of the Civil War. The Bandy Center will provide participants with breakfast at 8:00 am and the tour starts at 9:00am returning to Dalton at 6:30 pm. Cost per person is $50.
