On Aug. 24, 1992, Hurricane Andrew slammed into South Florida, devastating Homestead, Florida City and parts of Miami, then continued northwest across the Gulf of Mexico to strike the Louisiana coastline. We were living in West Palm Beach at the time, and I remember that being one of the few times, Sal and I worried about the safety of our family. We went down to Homestead a couple of days after the storm, to help with the clean up at the BMX track our son rode at, and I remember Sal saying that he could not believe it, and that it looked like a war zone. Hurricanes can be horrible and deadly, so never underestimate Mother Nature.
