On August 9, we all celebrated Book Lovers Day and today, September 6, we celebrate Read-A-Book Day. While these two days are very similar in nature, the difference is that today encourages everyone, book lovers and non-book lovers alike, to find a book they would enjoy, find a nice, quiet and relaxing spot and read for a while. Reading is very good for improving memory and concentration as well as reducing stress. Reading books is among brain-stimulating activities shown to slow down cognitive decline in old age; people who participated in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetimes having a slower rate of decline in memory and other mental capacities. Reading is a good way to learn about other times, other places and many other things and is also a very affordable means of entertainment. * The very first books used parchment or vellum (calf skin) for the book pages. * The book covers were made of wood and often covered with leather. * The books were fitted with clasps or straps. * Public libraries appeared in the Middle Ages. * Books in public libraries were often chained to a bookshelf or a desk to prevent theft.
