On Christmas Eve 46 years ago, astronauts Frank Borman, James Lovell and Bill Anders entered lunar orbit on the first mission that took humans to another celestial body. On their fourth orbit coming around from the far side of the moon they saw something unexpected, the rise of the Earth. Bill Anders took several photographs and one of them became the iconic photo called Earthrise. The photo is labeled one of the most influential photos of all-time. It showed the beauty and fragility of Earth all in one. The link Im sharing is a great recreation of how the astronauts came to take the photo. It was made last year during the 45th anniversary of Apollo 8 and it makes use of imagery from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. The impact of the photo is best summed in a quote that was made by Bill Anders in a discussion after the flight: We came all this way to explore the Moon, and the most important thing is that we discovered the Earth. Bill Anders, Lunar Module Pilot, Apollo 8 So on this historic anniversary, I close with a quote made made Apollo 8 Commander James Lovell as he signed off from a live tv transmission from the moon 46 years ago tonight: From the crew of Apollo 8, we close with good night, good luck, a Merry Christmas and God bless all of you, all of you on the good Earth, https://youtube/watch?v=dE-vOscpiNc
