On December 3, I got to see Author and Punisher at the Casbah in San Diego. When you hear about a band that is metal or more specifically doom metal you think of top trier acts like Crowbar or the Melvins. One of the opening bands was your typical metal band. Hessian dudes with plenty of guitars with the formulaic back and forth guitar sways that is cliché at many metal shows. But Author and Punish the alter ego of Tristan Shone looks like someone who would walk into an EDM stage at Coachella plug in a thumb drive and groove to prerecorded tracks. But Author and Punisher is the real deal. Prior to Author and Punisher’s set on a rainy day in San Diego, Tristan Shone set up his gear with the help of his friends frantically trying to assemble his hand made apparatuses as if he was trying to catch a lighting bolt to give power to his amazing late night set. Wearing a laryngophone around his throat and DIY microphone in front of his face Author and Punisher captivated the predominantly masculine long mane crowd who was quietly thudding their crania evidently trying to understand how one man turned doom metal into a solo affair. With stunning video projections, the words and sounds coming from his contraptions were dark and infectious hooking the expert metal fans. Author and Punisher has four more dates after Christmas and he will be performing at Psycho California formerly Psycho de Mayo a three day music fest in Santa Ana at the Observatory on May 15-17 including artists Kylesa, Earth, Om, Russian Circles, and Orange Goblin. Headliners will be announced on January 15. https://facebook/pages/Author-Punisher/193205745964?sk=app_308540029359 https://facebook/psychocalifornia https://facebook/irockkphotos irockphotos.net/ © Guillermo Prieto 2014
