On December 30, 1986, four players of the Swift Current Broncos Western Hockey League team were killed in a bus accident en route to Regina: Trent Kresse, Scott Kruger, Chris Mantyka and Brent Ruff (Lindys younger brother). All of those players numbers were retired and are commemorated on all Broncos jerseys as a tribute. They were all the inspirations for the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy, an annual award for the WHLs Player of the Year. Joe Sakic (one of the survivors) lived to tell about it afterwards; he went on to a stellar NHL career with the Quebec Nordiques/Colorado Avalanche franchise. On this first day of the 2014-2015 World Junior Hockey Tournament, do you remember this infamous moment from the 1986-1987 tourney? Its The Punch-up in Piestany where Canada took on the old USSR, and this was referred to as Hockeys Cold War. CBC used to televise this event, but since the early 1990s, TSN has that honour. Heres the vintage CBC footage of this infamous event: https://youtube/watch?v=2vjcr0_NKEA
