On December 6, 1941, the British hospital ship HMHS Lady Shirley - TopicsExpress

On December 6, 1941, the British hospital ship HMHS Lady Shirley was bringing wounded soldiers back home to England. One of the men on board was 2nd Lt. Charles Cecil Batty, my grandfather. The ship was torpedoed by a German U-boat as it rounded the Straits of Gibraltar. There we no survivors. The attack left my grandmother a widow, and her two children, David and Hilary, fatherless. My Dad idolized his father, whom I never met. I honour his memory.
