On Friday, December 5, at around 4:30 PM, officers were dispatched to a welfare check at a home. When officers entered the residence, they encountered a foul odor, including a strong odor of ammonia & urine. Officers exited the home & requested assistance from Loves Park Fire Department. Firemen used Self Contained Breathing Apparatus to enter the home to search for any occupants. No occupants were located, however dozens of cats were observed inside the residence. The home was condemned by the Fire Department & Winnebago County Animal Services was requested at the scene. An official number of cats removed from the home, or their general health condition was not immediately available, but estimates place the number of cats & kittens at around 50. The cats were removed by Winnebago County Animal Services & transported to their shelter, where a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was waiting to check over the cats. It is believed that the cats were all pure bread, but that has not been confirmed either at this point. The resident was issued a notice to appear in court on January 5, for three counts of No Vaccination/Registration, three counts of Owner Duties & one count of Having Too Many Animals. The charges are merely allegations & the defendant is considered innocent, unless proven guilty in a court of law.
