On Friday July 18th as we celebrate our 8th year winning best Irish Pub we wanted to add a good cause to the brilliant night we have planned. Tir na nOg has always been noted for giving back to the community. On this night we are raising funds for a young Irish nurse, Laura is from Dublin. This is her story. If you cannot make it to the pub, there is a connection below to which you can donate. We will raffle prizes and have fun raising funds for this great cause. Pass the word. Live music from Wake & District Pipes & Drums. My Three Kilts and special guests Whiskey of The Damned. Free admission Donations for Lauras trip would be greatly appreciated. Slainte Annie Nice My name is Laura Hitchings, I am an Irish midwife, living in Raleigh and working for UNCs department of womens health.Im headed to Malawi to work in womens health, education, fistula repair and to catch those babies. Im travelling to Lilongwe the nations capital to volunteer for two months. Im raising money to travel there and also make a much needed donation to the hospital! Despite being the nations capital the centers here have very limited resources due to the financial restraints. In Malawi which has one of the worlds worst maternal mortality rates, a shocking 1 in 36 women die in childbirth rather than becoming a proud mother. In addition to working as a midwife I will be educating the midwives and doctors on up to date emergency obstetric practices. I will also do some work with the Freedom from fistula Foundation. An estimated 2 million women in Africa suffer with an obstetric fistula. A fistula usually occurs during an obstructed labor when emergency care is unavailable. Women with obstructed labors often struggle until the baby dies. During this horrific process loss of circulation causes tissues to die, leaving large gaps between the birth canal and bladder and rectum causing incontinence. Most women suffering with a fistula are ostracized by their families as they smell and are continually wet. They are forced to live as outcasts. The Foundation works tirelessly to repair these and give women a chance at rehabilitation! Im looking for all the help i can find to get me there! My charity page is gofundme/85uluo Here you can see the money raised so far and also learn more about the foundation.
