On Friday, November 8th, I was notified over the phone by my adviser that Jeff Nardone, a journalism adviser of Grosse Pointe South High School’s newspaper and the mentor I had at Michigan Interscholastic Press Association (MIPA) Summer Journalism Workshop in 2011 had passed away from T-Cell Lymphoma. Mr. Nardone was my Sports Journalism adviser at MIPA. He was an intelligent man that instilled my mind with knowledge that I still use to this very day. Though I only worked alongside him for less than a week, I stayed in contact with him through email for more than a year. Mr. Nardone left an impact on me like no other. The last day I saw him, he gave me a small sheet of yellow paper with his comments on how I can become a better journalist in the future. Six words from the paper stood out to me and left an everlasting impact on my life: “DON’T GET LOST IN THE SHUFFLE.” I could never explain how much those words and this man has changed my life, but I can say the result has lead me to earning the Lem Tucker Journalism Scholarship and unbreakable confidence. Coincidently, my adviser told me this right before I was about to cover the Season Opener of the Men’s Basketball Game at 2:30 p.m. in McGuirk Arena for the Grand Central Magazine. I dedicate this article to you Jeff. I know you would be proud. The tears I cried after hearing about your passing lets me know that you still hold a significant space in my heart and I will continue to work hard and live by your words forever. Rest in peace. gcmag.org/john-simons-hard-work-in-offseason-paying-off-for-central-michigan/
