On July 12, 1984, the Democratic presidential candidate Walter F. Mondale named New York Congresswoman Geraldine A. Ferraro his running mate, making her the first woman to run on a major party ticket. (NYT). Only one other woman, Sarah Palin, has ever been nominated by a major U.S. party for the number two office [John McCains Republican running mate in 2008.] No major party has ever nominated a woman for the presidency. [Victoria Woodhull was nominated by the Equal Rights Party for president in 1872, nearly a half-century before women nationwide received the vote; but then one third party or another has always beaten the major parties to the punch historically in promoting major reforms.] Here, a list of the nations in which one or more women have served in the top position as head of national government: Ceylon (Sri Lanka), India, Israel, Central African Republic, Great Britain, Portugal, Dominica, Norway, Yugoslavia, Pakistan, Lithuania, Bangladesh, France, Poland, Turkey, Canada, Burundi, Rwanda, Bulgaria, Haiti, Guyana, New Zealand, Mongolia, Senegal, South Korea, Sao Tome and Principe, Finland, Peru, Mozambique, Macedonia, Ukraine, Bahamas, Germany, Jamaica, Moldova, Iceland, Croatia, Madagascar, Trinidad and Tobago, Australia, Slovakia, Mali, Thailand, Denmark, Guinea-Bissau, Slovenia, Latvia, and Argentina.
