On July 2 the government decided to delay implementation of the “employer mandate” in the Affordable Care Act. The employer mandate requires large employers (those with the equivalent of 50 or more full time employees) to provide coverage for workers or pay a penalty in 2014. The delay means that the penalty for employers will not take effect until 2015. It is important to understand what this delay means and how it will impact your company or you as an individual: • The delay announced on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 only applies to the employer mandate. This mandate and penalty will take effect beginning in 2015. • The July 2 announcement does not delay the “individual mandate”, the provision in the law that requires individuals to carry health coverage or pay a tax starting in 2014.
