On July 23, 2014, at approximately 12:34pm, officers from the Covington Police Department responded to a call of a suspicious person carrying a sword on Legion Drive in Covington. Covington police officers arrived at 3100 block area of Brookwood Circle just off Legion Drive at approximately 12:36pm, and made contact with a white male who is caring large medieval type sword. As one Covington Police officer exited his vehicle. He was attacked by the male suspect with the sword. This officer backed away from his attacker and gave verbal commands and drew his service weapon. The suspect then charged the officer with the sword over his head in attempt to strike the officer. The officer discharged his weapon striking the suspect. Immediate medical attention was given to the suspect by the responding officers. EMS and Covington Fire personnel were immediately notified and responded to the scene. He was airlifted to Grady Hospital in critical condition. This investigation is now being turned over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The suspects identity is not being released at this time. His family is being contacted. Per policy, the officer will be placed on administrative leave, until the investigation is completed.
