On July 9, 1868 we adopted the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, which among other things made the Bill of Rights (Amendments 1 - 10) applicable to the states and gave all US citizens protection against government action at both the state and federal level. Section 1 does all of this and says: Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws. Think about those words in the context of our seemingly endless social conflict about a multitude of issues. There is and should be no "majority rule" that conflicts with the fundamental rights of all Americans.
