On June 19th the Icelandic jazz pianist Sunna Gunnlaugs will be making a stop at Unitarian Universalist Society of Mill Creek in Newark DE with her trio as part of their bi-coastal North American tour. Gunnlaugs has been described as a pianist who combines elements of American and European concepts. Her trios sound is open and transparent, while at the same time rhythmic and flowing, with the emphasis always on melody. The trio (Sunna Gunnlaugs - piano, Þorgrímur Jónsso - bass, Scott McLemore - drums) was named the 2013 Official Band of Reykjavik, and the latest album Distilled was nominated in 4 categories for the Icelandic Music Awards. All About Jazz included it in its list of 12 Best Albums of 2013 and the NYC blog JazzWrap named it Album of the Year. The trio has been featured on major jazz festivals in the United States and Europe, and last year performed two sold out shows at the Kennedy Centers jazz club in Washington DC as part of their Nordic Cool series. They have been performing mostly in Europe recently and this is a rare opportunity to get out and hear a world-class piano trio in an intimate setting. Thursday, June 19 at 7:30pm. 59 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, 19711 Tickets $18
