On June 5, 1989, one day after the Chinese armys deadly crushing of the 1989 protests in Beijing, a single, unarmed young man stood his ground before a column of tanks on the Avenue of Eternal Peace. This extraordinary confrontation became an icon of the struggle for freedom around the world. It still is a symbol of courage, to stand up against a majority and say: no more of this! Now...everybody knows he was a hero, there is no doubt whatsoever about that. They made a documentary to find out who he was. But consider this. What about the front tank driver? He stopped and tried to avoid to run the man over. He must have had orders to march on, which he probably disobeyed for a moment. The tank driver in his heart did not want to harm another human being. He refused to do that at that point. So luckily he wanted to go around the young man, which gave others the time to pull him away. No telling what happened to the tank driver and what he did before or after the event. Nobody knows his name to. Eternal Peace to you all. youtube/watch?v=qq8zFLIftGk (2:22).
