On March 18, 2013, veteran actors Eddie Garcia and Nora Aunor made history as they won the top acting honors at the 7th Asian Film Awards (AFA) held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai. Garcia won Best Actor for his performance as an aging gay man in Jun Lanas Bwakaw, while the Superstar was declared Best Actress for her widely acclaimed performance as a barren Muslim midwife in Brillante Mendozas Thy Womb. Garcia competed against Taiwans Joseph Chang (Girlfriend, Boyfriend), South Koreas Choi Min-sik (Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time), Hong Kongs Tony Leung Ka-fai (Cold War), and Hong Kong/Mainland Chinas Liu Ye (The Last Supper). For the Best Actress category, Noras co-nominees were South Koreas Cho Min-soo (Pieta), Afghanistans Golshifteh Farahani (The Patience Stone), Taiwans Gwei Lun-Mei (Girlfriend, Boyfriend), and Mainland Chinas Hao Lei (Mystery). Garcias victory is one of his two best actor triumphs in the international arena, while Aunors award is one of her eight international best actress trophies.
