On May 11, 1988 a student of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago by the name of David Nelson painted Mirth & Girth. It is a painting depicting Mayor Harold Washington wearing womens lingerie and holding a pencil. After the controversy arose, and the overtly racist nature of the painting was exposed, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago tried to dismiss act citing that the student suffered from psychological problems. Point of fact that before any artwork is displayed it has to be approved first by the Office of Student Life, at SAIC. What happened? The school (in cowardly fashion) decided to shift the blame and say that it was the students fault and that SAIC had little responsibility. What does this say about SAIC? On a superficial level it would suggest that they often cite ignorance as an excuse. It would also suggest that the school does not teach, for if it did, the racist subject matter expressed in Mirth & Girth would not have ever seen the light of day. The painting was completed and displayed just five months after Harold Washington; the greatest mayor of Chicago died. The staff of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago are at best Classless and at worst racist. The schools foundation was formed on racism and should be shut-down!
