On Monday September 15, 2014 Mayor John Cook, Fire Chief Ed Temerowski and Police Chief Wingert honored ten outstanding employees for their life saving efforts in July, 2014. On Thursday July 31, 2014 at 1:24 pm, Wickenburg Police Dispatch received a 911 call in reference to a vehicle collision in the 100 block of east Yavapai Street. Wickenburg Police Officers were on scene within seconds. Witnesses advised the officers that the driver did not appear to be breathing. Officers removed the driver from the vehicle and placed her on the sidewalk to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Officers also utilized a portable automated external defibrillator (AED) that is carried in police patrol vehicles for incidents such as this one. It was at this time that the officers on scene realized that the victim was Donna Ables, a Town of Wickenburg employee. To say the least, this added more anxiety to the situation but also a profound sense of relentless determination. Officers transitioned Donna’s care to the Wickenburg Fire Department and Life Line Ambulance upon their arrival at the scene. Donna was transported to the hospital for further treatment. The Wickenburg Police Department officers utilized their training and lifesaving tactics that day without a moment of hesitation to act and do what was necessary to save Donna’s life. Officers and members of the Wickenburg Fire Department worked as a cohesive and flawless unit. Everyone there exemplified outstanding teamwork, dedication, excellence, service and professionalism in the field of public safety. Donna was also there to thank and congratulate each individual. Those honored were: Officer Patrick Blackburn, Firefighter Jim Bowie, Officer Gabe Fuentes, Firefighter Joe Geraci, Detective Joe Lahey, Officer Zach LaJeunesse, Detective Kenny Lutkiewicz, Firefighter Darien Pena, Firefighter Doug Thomas and Firefighter John Wittman. Everyone received a certificate of outstanding service and the officers received the Lifesaving Medal. Finally, a special thank you to The Wellik Foundation for the grant funded purchase of the automated external defibrillators that are now located in Town buildings, schools, and police and fire vehicles. The AED’s are incredible tools that help save lives when seconds count and to enhance the quality of life in the town of Wickenburg. And lastly, thank you to Wickenburg Fire Captain Tony Christofferson for writing the grant requesting the AEDs and providing the training in their use and CPR in June 2014.
