On November 18, 1872, a deputy federal marshal went to Susan B. Anthonys house and politely asked her to accompany him to see U.S. Commissioner William Storrs. When she asked the reason, she was told she was to be arrested for the crime of voting in the presidential election on November 5. She insisted on being handcuffed. In speeches preceding her trial, she cited the preamble to the Constitution (We the people) and Websters definition of citizens as people with the right to vote and hold office, saying The only question left to be settled now is: Are women persons? She was convicted, and yet she refused to pay the fine.
