Skilfully contrasting pleasure with the absence of pleasure, tasting the stilling of all fabrications and relinquishment of all acquisitions—of anticipation of pleasure and avoidance of pain in service of an entity/identity (asmi, i.e. “am”-conceit). What is equanimity? How deeply related is vedana (feeling, i.e. pleasure-and-pain) and entity/identity? How are they implicated in cognition? Maybe entity/identity actually depends on vedana*, and so with the ending of vedana, entity/identity ends too. With no entity to guide through push and pull (negative and positive conditioning), there also comes to an end a whole part of cognition involved with identity, which is something like “world-making”. In fact, it could be that what this “world-making” is, is any and all conceptual cognition—i.e. namarupa. No projected world populated with perceptions of objects significant only as pleasures and pains for a projected entity motivated (intentioned) by greeds and aversions/hatreds. Many processes of cognition remain, but intentional impulses (towards pleasure, away from pain) stop. Namarupa stops reflecting on sensory consciousness (this is why the senses become vivid, see Cognition Theory in Indian Buddhism). The sense spheres and contact become insignificant (not conveying significance for an entity/identity). Vedana is absent, which means tanha (craving) is absent, which means upadana (clinging-sustenance) is absent, which means bhava (existence, becoming) is extinguished, and birth and suffering with it, too. And of course, at the root, ignorance in regards to cognition free of entity/identity has been eradicated. This is why the Buddha announces the overcoming of exactly three fetters: sensuality, becoming and ignorance. Sensuality is the lusting for “food” for the entity/identity, i.e. pleasures. Becoming is the projection of an entity/identity in a world, i.e. existence. Ignorance is the veil lifted off of cognition when the twelve links are cut.
