On October 25, 2014, CSULB & CSUF Shotokan Karate Clubs hosted their second annual Jiyu Kumite Clinic, followed immediately by a White / Brown Belt Tournament. This clinic and tournament were started last year with the goal of building the next generation of champion fighters in a safe environment. There was a strong showing of SKA members from eleven dojos ranging from Northern California to San Diego and all points in between. 36 participants were in attendence to the introductory clinic with a total of 16 white belts, 5 brown belts, and 15 black belts. Special thanks to Tom Heyman for leading a refereeing clinic at Long Beach on Oct 18th in preparation for the tournament. Tom also provided valuable guidance to the black belt refs and corner judges between rounds. Thanks also to the many black belts who generously offered their time and effort officiating the matches. 19 competitors participated in the Women’s, White Belt and Brown Belt divisions.
