On Rickie Grigg, Bill Bullis writes, I knew Ricky (and his sister Robyn) beginning in the early 1950s. First from Malibu and then from lifeguarding (he was a Santa Monica guard and Hopkins, Schurmer and I were L.A. City guards). We competed against each other in paddle board water polo and other lifeguard events. His mother had a house on the board walk just south of the Santa Monica pier. Ricky spent his last two college years at Stanford and was often in Santa Cruz. I particularly remember one day when there was this bombie (sp?) breaking way outside at Steamer Lane. Ricky, Peter Cole and I paddled out. I saw Ricky knee paddle and then prone it up the face of a very large wave, not make it and go over the falls backwards. Ricky was a great surfer, good all around waterman (remember the picture of him snorkeling next to an extremely large whale) and had more confidence in his ability (e.g., riding a fair size wave at Steamer Lane doing a head stand) than most people. Another great meets the Great Kahuna in the sky. Bill Corky Carroll writes yes, I got an email last night telling me Rick passed yesterday afternoon, very sad news. He was a good pal for a long long time. Cheryl and I spent a couple of months staying with him when he had the house right in front of Sunset Beach in the late 1960s, the dude had a great sense of humor and was fond of puns. Kept me laughing all the time, my favorite kind of guy..... much like you, munoz and others who see the lighter side of things. Great guy. Another one of the real bummers about being geezers is that we keep losing friends.
