On Saturday evening August 31, at approximately 10:20 pm, Officers Bristol and Saunders were making a routine check of the former Mary McClellan Hospital property located at 1 Myrtle Avenue in the Village of Cambridge due to the recent burglaries and copper theft from the building. As Officer Bristol approached the former nursing school she observed several buckets of copper alongside of the roadway that were not there earlier in her shift. Officer Bristol could hear people talking and what she believed was one person running from the area. She immediately called for assistance from members of the Cambridge-Greenwich Police Department, Washington County Sheriff’s Department and the New York State Police. After a short search Officers Bristol and Saunders located a subject hiding behind the bushes of the former ice house, located on the former Hospital property. The subject, William E. Johnson, age 34, stated he was living in a tent in Granville, New York and was taken into custody without incident. Johnson was charged with two counts of Burglary in the Third Degree, Petit Larceny, Possession of Burglary Tools and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. He was arraigned in front of Cambridge Village Justice Sica and remanded to the Washington County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000.00 cash bail. Police do not believe Johnson was responsible for a burglary that occurred the week before where burglars did extensive damage to the second floor of the hospital itself removing copper pipe. Anyone with information on either burglary is asked to contact Cambridge Police at 518-677-3044
