On Saturday, two people were killed in clashes between pro- and anti-Russians partisans in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv. The international community keeps beating around the bush about the situation while people are actually dying on the streets, crushed by bricks and even shot. It seemed like a century has passed since then, but only a couple of weeks ago people were mowed down in Kiev by snipers. It turned out to be the grim opening act of Crimea’s formal surrender to Russia. Until the month of March is over, Crimea will adopt the Russian ruble and will switch to Moscow time. More red on the map from now on (it’s not like the dismantle of the USSR fooled anyone, right?) Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry keeps playing the same tune: the international community warns that there will “be consequences,” although nobody knows what that means. You know what these consequences are? On Monday, the US and EU, with their combined might and power, announced that...a bunch of Russians and Ukrainians (all top-of-the-pile politicians) won’t be able to enter the EU and the US. Well, thanks for nothing. Do you really think they care about not traveling to the US or to London or Paris? It’s like telling a bear who lived in a tundra all his life that he can’t go to Sahara. He won’t care. More, he’ll laugh in your face. That’s the type of measure the west is taking. Anyway, US’s man on the ground, John Kerry, keeps saying that the international community will “do something about it.” Well, if that something is telling a few hotheads in Moscow and Kiev not to book plane tickets, I’m clearly not impressed. You know what the Russians are doing in response? On primetime TV, one of their most important media pundits (think Jay Lenoruski) says that Russia can turn the US into “radioactive ash.” The station he was on is under state control, so the guy was basically channeling Putin. That’s what Putin tells us- leave us alone or we’ll nuke you. How can you reply to that? Really? Source: Youtube You don’t need a PhD in Russian literature to understand what’s going on here. The guy is basically telling us that if Obama doesn’t leave Putin alone (he’s upset that Obama is with him on the phone “for hours”), then a big radioactive cloud might happen. You might think that this is your average fanatic who played too much Red Alert. Just that he’s not. He’s Putin right-hand man and his main propagandistic tool. How do you think Putin keeps the masses hungry and subdued? Clue: this guy plays a big part. Does that mean that the US is indeed willing to take part in a military intervention over there, directly risking the lives of hundreds of millions of Americans back home, who will become the target of Russian long-range nuclear missiles? Does that mean that the US doesn’t care about people dying in the street, in a country that’s supposedly protected by the US in terms of their territorial integrity? Does it mean that we finally go against the Russians in a way that will probably change the world as we know it? Look, these are very big questions and I quite doubt it anyone can answer them in just a few words. What is quite clear is that the US dabbles on the international stage. Nobody takes us seriously and all we have is Kerry hopping on and off an airplane and smiling for the cameras. Source: Powerline In the real world, however, the Russians stopped fearing us and the Ukrainians don’t think we can help anymore- at all. While many (maybe the cynics) can think that the Ukrainian crisis is not our business, it’s another proof of the little face the US still holds in international affairs (hey, drones killing civilians is an exception). I bet the Chinese are rubbing their hands.
