On Thursday 30th October 2014, a new priest appeared at the entrance of the Englehardt Street Clinic, behaving in the same way as the usual people who turn up every week to witness every woman entering or leaving the womens medical clinic. Has the ‘old-guard’ called for reinforcements? Do they feel they need to? Last week the RTP Facebook site put the protesters on notice that we would be photographing them and posting their faces on this site, to highlight the fact that their protest is anything but peaceful as they claim. The irony is that the priest said to one of our photographers, “Please leave me alone”; a person who had no intention of leaving vulnerable female patients and their carers alone! But if you think that is ironic, this same priest took out his cell phone and started taking photos too! Pope Francis advised his flock that they should show more compassion than condemnation for women who decide to attend a private, legal medical clinic without being exposed to intimidation, harassment and the violation of their medical privacy? It is well over time that these people should show respect to anyone attending a medical clinic and leave them all alone. RTP suggests that if this priest is known to you, tell him you do not approve or condone this kind of behaviour. If you enjoy the fellowship of the Catholic Church there are plenty of other priests and congregations who show more compassion for the vulnerable. RTP
