On Thursday, Ronald Phillips is scheduled to be executed in Ohio for one of the most heinous crimes imaginable: the rape and murder of his girlfriend’s three-year-old daughter in 1993. He’s abandoned his remaining appeals and had just one request: he wants to donate his kidney and his heart to his ailing mother and sister. His attorney said if the state agreed, he would donate his other organs as well. He claims it’s not a delaying tactic; Phillips just wants to make one final gesture for good before he dies. I hope the state allows it. It may be the textbook definition of “too little, too late,” but at least for the people receiving his organs, it’s not too late.
