On Thursday morning, March 27, 2014, Decatur Police and Fire/Rescue responded to a fully engulfed apartment fire at West Ridge Apartments on 5th Ave SW Decatur. These brave first responders (and the family before them) were unable to save the babies. Killed in the fire were Marlena, 4, and her brother Dexter, 2. I am calling on my great Decatur community to band together to help this family through their tragedy. I challenge our many fine churches and civic organizations to do something extra to show your Christianity and compassion. Thus far, a fund has been set up at Redstone Credit Union in the names of parents Dexter and Tanetha Miland. Also LeeMar McQuire of MasterCuts Barbershop has pledged to donate all haircut proceeds tomorrow morning to the family. These are great but I know the hometown I know and love has more to offer. My struggling, in-college niece, Kelsey Miller just called me inquiring where she could donate her entire check! She said the good Lord placed it on her heart. She wanted to give anonymously and I have violated her wishes. Forgive me for revealing your secret Kelsey, but you darling, have touched my heart. Need I say more...
