On a ladder today, scraping the paint of my own home in the mountains and seeing how wind and rain have had their say on wood. Meanwhile, listening to air hissing through pine, oak, birch, maple and hickory trees in small bursts, punctuated by bird calls. A warbler. A finch. And when I stop for water orange and yellow flashes of color dot the air - butterflies are flittering around flowers in bloom; a symbiosis of Being. I love the muddy puzzle of a stream bed, with its unpredictable underground springs; sweat on an outdoor summer day as a garden is glazed in sun; the hum of flying insects gathering pollens on their small little wings; home arts like pickling cucumbers grown from seed, or cooking with vegetables and herbs who were just sprouts, now - just picked. And also I love understanding the plumbing of pipes and wires and latches. Good hardware is so basic and yet, so essential. All that a house in nature with its challenges and demands require, comes with me when I then go to work. Something about feeling the presence of the ground, it just doesnt leave my feet - and how life is so delicate and also fierce, and persistent. All this rock and water, wind and vegetable comes to the city - from paint scraping to skyscrapers.
