On a train journey to Kerala. A frail old lady - about my mothers - TopicsExpress

On a train journey to Kerala. A frail old lady - about my mothers age - very neatly dressed in a well worn but well cared for sari, carrying a big handbag over her shoulder and struggling to precariously balance a pile of books (mostly non fiction) which she is trying to interest people to buy. No one spares a second look. Im almost moved to tears. I buy Abdul kalams governance for growth of India. I come to know she is a destitute, having to fend for herself ever since her husband died and children abandoned her .. I imagine my mother in this situation and cant bear it.. I offer to just give her the money since I really dont need the book.. With absolute dignity she refuses and blesses me in impeccable English and Malayalam and very wearily carries the whole pile of books to the next compartment.. Im kicking myself for not carrying enough money to buy her entire stock.
